Cataracts A cataract causes vision to be
blurry or cloudy. When a cataract forms, the lens of the eye changes impairing
vision. Light is no longer able to readily pass through the lens resulting in
blurred vision. Usually, cataracts occur in persons over 55 and are thought to
be part of the natural aging process. In rare cases, cataracts develop in
young children. A comprehensive eye examination can detect cataract formation
and determine if it is "ready" to be removed. Glaucoma Glaucoma
is a disease of the optic nerve, often related to increases in pressure inside
the eye. This increase in pressure can often damage or destroy the optic
nerve. If left untreated, it can cause irreversible damage and even
blindness. Patients are often unaware of any symptoms, making it important
for their pressures to be checked regularly during a comprehensive eye exam.
This is a simple, painless test Diabetic Persons diagnosed with diabetes mellitus are at risk for developing diabetic
retinopathy, a serious disorder affecting the retina in the eye. Damage to the
retina over time can result in diminished vision and in some cases, either
partial or total blindness. In the early stages, patients may be unaware of this
disorder and may experience little or no noticeable loss of vision. A thorough,
annual eye exam can detect the presence of this disorder and any changes to the
retina. Dry Eye Dry eye is a disorder of the tear film due to tear deficiency or
excessive tear evaporation which causes damage to the interpalpebral ocular
surface (i.e. exposed eye surface) and is associated with symptoms of ocular
discomfort. The eye becomes dry either because there is not enough tears
being produced or because there is abnormally high rate of evaporation of tears.
