The proposed Tactical Medicine Fellowship Program is designed to provide the graduating fellow a comprehensive understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Tactical Medical Physician through evidenced based curriculum which includes hands on practical experience integrating both Law Enforcement and Emergency Medical Services through various training and didactic instruction. Upon completion, the fellow will possess the skills and knowledge to operate in austere tactical environments in addition to managing the medical needs of entire Law Enforcement agencies throughout West Virginia and The United States.
Recognizing the need for close affiliation with the Law Enforcement Community, this Fellowship places great emphasis throughout the program by fully integrating them with local Law Enforcement. Much of the fellow's time will be spent attending the West Virginia State Police Basic Officers Academy. This course of instruction is 16 weeks in duration and upon completion will certify them as a sworn Police Officer. Upon completion, the fellow will be assigned to various Law Enforcement agencies and integrated with their tactical teams to participate in training exercises as well as be available for call outs to observe and assist in medical oversight.
To provide for further integration with Law Enforcement, the fellow will be required to attend 3 weeks of Tactical Medicine Training at the International School of Tactical Medicine located in Palm Springs, California and culminating in completing 2 weeks at an approved SWAT school. This holistic approach to integrating with the Law Enforcement community, we feel, will not only provide them with the skills necessary to operate in such austere environments, but the knowledge and training to anticipate and understand the medical needs associated with it. The rest of the curriculum will focus on refining the skills needed to address all the healthcare needs of a Law Enforcement agency. This will include not only team health management, but an overall health and wellness program for the agency.
