Research Projects
Edward Moran, M.D. (2008)
"Assessment of Weight and Blood Pressure in West Virginia 5th graders"
Let's Get Moving Project" & "Concerta & Adderal XR for the Treatment of ADHD
in Children"
Autumn Morales, M.D. (2006) - Let's Get
Moving: Abstract of pediatric obesity in 5 counties in West Virginia
& A Fever in Winter: Atypical
Presentation of Mycoplasma
Lynn Patterson (2005) - Performed a study to assess the adolescent's
knowledge about Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) before and after exposure to an
educational video about SBS in hopes of reducing
the frequency of SBS. It was noted that adolescents had some prior knowledge of
SBS, females and babysitters more than males, and that after watching the
video, increased awareness and knowledge about the definition of SBS was
evident.
Ryan Cicenas (2004) - Performed a study to survey the
knowledge, exposure, and usage of substance abuse among seventh graders at a
rural West Virginia public school. A one page survey was given to two
groups of seventh graders (36 total students) to see how many could identify
to a variety of usage and exposure situations. It was concluded that
substance abuse is a substantial problem among young West Virginia
teenagers. Influence from friends and family has aggravated the already
severe problem and that better efforts of education at a younger age are
necessary in helping young people make wiser decision concerning substance
abuse.
Chad Smith (2004) - Performed a study using PCR and restriction enzyme
technology to characterize the PBP 2b binding protein of pneumococcus isolated in the Huntington community from
both pediatric and adult populations over the past 20 years. Taking the
restriction patterns and relating them back to the antibiotic susceptibility of
the isolate, it was found that antibiotic susceptibility patterns correlate
closely with different restriction patterns. Chad won Marshall University
Research Day in 2001 and 2002 for his research. In addition, Chad presented his
poster at the national ACP meeting in 2002.
