Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine
at MARSHALL UNIVERSITY
PULMONARY FELLOWSHIP
TRAINING PROGRAM
The Marshall University School of Medicine Adult
Pulmonary Fellowship Program is a clinically oriented ACGME - accredited two-year program that
fulfills the requirements for Subspecialty Boards. A major goal of the
program is to train new Pulmonary physicians for clinical or academic
careers. Fellows obtain experience and competence in dealing with
diagnostic and management problems in patients with pulmonary disorders.
The medical school
utilizes a combined clinical facility of about one thousand beds including
two community hospitals and the Huntington Veteran’s Administration Medical
Center. Fellows rotate on the clinical services at Cabell Huntington
Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center and the Huntington VAMC and provide
consultation as well as direct patient care. Ambulatory care clinics are
located at the Byrd Clinical Center and the Huntington VAMC.
All three hospitals
are geographically close to each other and to the medical school and the
Byrd Clinical Center. All
hospitals have modern facilities and provide extensive medical services
including intensive care units, pulmonary function labs, radiology services
and thoracic surgery services.
Fellows obtain
experience and competence with procedures utilized in Pulmonary
Medicine including bronchoscopy, endobronchial untrasound, intubation, thoracentesis, central line and arterial line insertion, chest tube
placement, ultrasound use for procedures, ventilator management and pulmonary function interpretation.
Fellows also obtain experience with percutaneous needle aspiration/biopsy, pulmonary exercise testing, and sleep study
interpretation. An interventional Pulmonologist is also on the
faculty.
Fellows receive
training in Outpatient Pulmonary Medicine. Pulmonary Fellows see clinic
patients each week in a continuity of care clinic located at the Byrd
Clinical Center, the Ambulatory
Care center for the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall
University. Additional ambulatory care experience is gained at the
Huntington VAMC. Pulmonary faculty members are present for each clinic to
supervise patient care and provide instruction.
A variety of
Pulmonary conferences are scheduled throughout the two-year program. The
conferences include a monthly research conference and
journal
club. Clinical and didactic Pulmonary Conferences are scheduled weekly.
Pulmonary-pathology conferences are also held intermittently. Fellows are assigned to present at the various conferences. Attendance at
core conferences is mandatory.
Research experience is
provided during the Fellowship and an original research project acceptable
for publication is required for completion of the program. Protected time is
given for research.
Fellows currently
receive 15 days of vacation (excluding weekends) with an additional week that can be used for a
conference. The salary for fellows is determined by University policy and is
equal for all fellows consistent with post-graduate year status.
