New Faculty

 Dr. Piyali Dasgupta joined the Department in August, 2007 from the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa, Florida.

 Recent Accomplishments/Activities July 1 – December 31, 2007

Dr. Piyali Dasgupta has been awarded a Pharmaceutical Manufacturer’s Research Starter Grant beginning in January, 2008. The title of her project is entitled “α7-Nicotine receptor signaling in non small cell lung cancer”.

Dr. Larry Grover has been awarded a grant from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. The title of his project is “The effects of venlafaxine administration on central and peripheral brain-derived neurotropic factor in rats”.

 Dr. Grover’s graduate students Eunyoung Kim and Jennifer Cooke attended the 37th Annual Meeting of the Society of Neuroscience, November 3-7 in San Diego, CA and were co-authors on a poster entitled “Efficient LTP induction in hippocampal area CA1 over a wide range of burst intervals, with a peak near delta frequency”. 

Dr. Nalini Santanam presented a poster at the 14th Annual Meeting of Society for Free Radical in Biology and Medicine held at Washington DC, November 14-18, 2007.

Dr. Santanam has been nominated as the Chair of the Leadership Committee of the Women in Science Organization of the Society for Free Radical in Biology and Medicine

 Two CAPSTONE students, Miriah Gillespie and Nafeeza Hussein, working with Dr. Santanam have received 2007 NASA Scholarships.

 Dr. Monica Valentovic Chaired NIH Study Sections reviewing SBIR applications in July and November.

 Dr. Gary Rankin participated in two NIH Study Sections: the RCMI-IDeA Study Section and the CMBK Study Section.

 Mindy Asbury, a graduate student working in Dr. Kelley Kiningham’s laboratory, won the “Best Oral Presentation” award at the 82nd meeting of the West Virginia Academy of Sciences.
