The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University has received a family medicine "Top Ten" award from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) for being one of the nation's top schools in the percentage of graduates entering family medicine residencies.

A conference room located in the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center at Marshall University has been named in honor of the late Frederick J. Lotspeich, Ph.D., who was the founding chair of the School of Medicine's Department of Biochemistry. Lotspeich served as the chair from 1977 until 1991.
