Curriculum - Rotation Schedule

OBG-1


Night Float Obstetrics and Gynecology -3 blocks
Initial exposure to labor and delivery and ambulatory obstetrics in the hospital setting
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital
Residents provide care to low risk obstetrical patients in Labor and Delivery, to ambulatory and inpatient antepartum patients, to postpartum patients and receive initial exposure to emergency obstetrics and gynecology through consultations in the Emergency Department of Cabell Huntington Hospital.  

Gynecology- 2 blocks
Initial exposure to the performance of ambulatory and inpatient gynecologic procedures
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center, Surgery Center
Resident performs or assists wide range of gynecologic procedures and provides post-operative care under supervision of faculty or senior resident.  Also gains initial experience in providing gynecology consultation to the emergency department. 

Prenatal Diagnosis-1 block
Prenatal Diagnosis and Obstetrical Ultrasound in an ambulatory setting
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital Perinatal Center
Initial exposure to prenatal diagnosis and ultrasound imaging in pregnancy and of normal and abnormal female reproductive organs. 

Family Medicine Inpatient-1 block
Acute care of adult patients in a hospitalized setting
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital
Resident will rotate on the Family Medicine Service at Cabell Huntington Hospital and provide care to patients under the direct supervision of Family Medicine attending.   

Ambulatory Primary Care-1 block 
Ambulatory care in a rural setting
Location: Cabell Huntington Hospital Family Care Center, Ceredo, WV   
 Resident will provide care to ambulatory adult and pediatric patients in a rural outpatient setting under the direct supervision of Family Medicine attending. 

Obstetrics-4 blocks
Inpatient Obstetrics
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital
Resident will provide care to obstetrical patients in both high and low risk obstetrical inpatients at Cabell Huntington Hospital.  Residents provide a wide range of services to patients in L&D and the ante-partum and post-partum suites at the Hospital.  Resident expected to be able to rule out labor, assess risk status of patient, and recognize deviations from normal labor.   The resident is expected to provide intra-partum and post-partum care primarily to low risk obstetrical patients.  Residents may provide care to high risk inpatients under appropriate supervision.

Night Float Obstetrics and Gynecology-2 blocks
Management of obstetrical patients in a hospital setting
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital
Continued exposure to low risk and complex patients in labor and delivery as well as ante-partum suites.  During this rotation resident will be introduced to operative abdominal and vaginal delivery techniques. 

Gynecology-3 blocks
Inpatient and Ambulatory Gynecology
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center, Surgery Center, faculty offices
Increasing complexity of gynecologic surgical and non-surgical patients will be encountered during this rotation.  The resident is expected to perform laparotomy, laparoscopy, operative hysteroscopy, and abdominal hysterectomy under supervision of attending gynecologists.  The resident will provide inpatient postoperative care as well as care to non-surgical gynecologic patients, as well as provide consultation to the Emergency Department.
 

Obstetrics-3 blocks
Inpatient and Ambulatory Obstetrics
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital
Resident will provide care to low and high risk obstetrical inpatients as they build upon the experience of the first year. 

Maternal and Fetal Medicine-2 blocks
Ambulatory and inpatient management of at risk pregnancies.
Location
Cabell Huntington Hospital, faculty practices, Perinatal Center, Maternal Hypertension Center
Resident will, under supervision of the MFM faculty, provide care to at risk pregnancies.  Resident will build on basic ultrasound skills, provide consultation to at risk pregnancies, manage patients through the various high risk obstetrical clinics, and manage high risk obstetric inpatients. 

Oncology-2 blocks
Introduction to Gynecologic Oncology
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center, Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center
The resident will provide ambulatory, surgical, and postoperative care to patients with gynecologic malignancies under the supervision of gynecologic oncologist.  It is expected that the resident will understand common symptoms, appropriate evaluation, and staging of gynecologic malignancies.  Resident is required to attend the weekly colposcopy clinic where they will learn to evaluate and treat pre-invasive cervical disease.

Night Float Obstetrics and Gynecology-3 blocks
Management of obstetrical patients in a hospital setting
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital
Continued mastery of Obstetrics with emphasis on performance of abdominal and operative vaginal deliveries under direct supervision of attending obstetrician.  The resident is expected to oversee the management of all patients in L&D.  The resident is responsible for all high risk patients who are hospitalized in L&D or otherwise, as well as ambulatory high risk patients.  Consultation to the Emergency Department will be provided and the resident is responsible for surgical patients admitted through the ED. 
 

Obstetrics-2 blocks
Inpatient and Ambulatory Obstetrics
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital, Perinatal Center, Faculty offices
The resident provides care to high risk obstetrical inpatients and Cabell Huntington Hospital.  The resident is also expected to supervise junior residents in the care of low risk patients. 

Maternal and Fetal Medicine-1 block
Ambulatory and inpatient management of at risk pregnancies.
Location
Cabell Huntington Hospital, faculty practices, Perinatal Center, Maternal Hypertension Center
Resident continues to build the skills necessary to care for at risk pregnancies. 

Gynecology-3 blocks
Inpatient and Ambulatory Gynecology
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center, Surgery Center, Faculty offices
Continued mastery of gynecologic skills with emphasis on pelvic surgery including vaginal hysterectomy, surgery for pelvic floor dysfunction, surgery for stress urinary incontinence, and operative laparoscopy.
 

Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility-2 blocks
Introduction to REI
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine, Faculty offices
The resident will be introduced to basic and advanced infertility evaluation and treatment options including exposure to assisted reproductive techniques including intrauterine insemination and in-vitro fertilization.  It is expected that trans-vaginal ultrasound skills will be honed during this rotation.

Gynecology-4 blocks
Chief Resident in Gynecology
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center, Surgery Center, Faculty offices
The resident will be responsible for the administration of the Gynecology service at Cabell Huntington Hospital.  During this rotation the resident will complete mastery of gynecologic surgical skills.  This resident also acts as administrative chief resident and is responsible for resident call schedules and acting as liaison between administration and residents. 

Obstetrics-4 blocks
Chief Resident in Obstetrics
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital, Perinatal Center, Faculty offices
The resident is responsible for the administration of the Obstetrical service and for the care of all obstetrical patients at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Gynecologic Oncology-4 blocks
Chief Resident in Gynecologic Oncology
Location:
Cabell Huntington Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center, Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center
The resident is responsible for the administration of the Gynecologic Oncology Service of University Obstetrics and Gynecology by providing ambulatory, surgical, chemotherapeutic, and post-operative care of patients with gynecologic malignancies under the direct supervision of attending gynecologic oncologists and become familiar with end of life care.
