Dr. Chertow received his medical degree from the
University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago (1965). He did a
fellowship in endocrinology at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical
Center in Chicago. He is board certified in three areas, internal
medicine, endocrinology and nuclear medicine. After training, he served
as an endocrinologist in the army during the Viet Nam war. He returned
to Chicago where he joined the faculty of the University of Illinois
College of Medicine as an endocrinologist in the Section of
Endocrinology and was also a staff physician in endocrinology and
nuclear medicine at the Westside Veterans Administration Medical Center.
In 1991 he spent 8 months as Visiting Scientist (Sabbatical) Baker
Medical Research Unit, Melbourne, Australia, leaning molecular biology
techniques for research.
In 1978, he left the University of Illinois to become one of the
pioneering physicians at Marshall University School of Medicine,
starting their first section of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has
since served as Professor and Chief of the Section of Endocrinology and
Professor of Anatomy.
He has received numerous research grants along with awards and honors at
MUSOM, including the Marshall University Research Board, Distinguished
Research Recognition Award for Research in Medicine and Allied Health
Sciences in 1979 for research during1976-1978, and again in 1982 for
research performed between 1979-1981. In 1992, he was chosen as The
Outstanding Scholar at Marshall University and received the
Meet-the-Scholar Award. In 1984, he served as President of the West
Virginia Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association. And receive the
Volunteer of the Year Award from the affiliate. In 1984, Dr. Chertow was
the initiator of state funded West Virginia Diabetes Control Program.
He has authored numerous publications and presented his research on
diabetes and bone disease and other endocrinology problems nationally.
He has edited and co-authored books on problem solving and medical
decision making in medicine. In1998 he was an invited speaker at the
American Diabetes Association's 58th Annual Scientific Sessions
Nutrition Symposium entitled Vitamin A and Gene Expression on the topic
"Vitamin A is Required for Appropriate Islet Function".
