University Family
Practice will be at the heart of the
Marshall University Medical Center.
The department will be one of the
best-equipped in the state, taking a multidisciplinary
approach similar to the ones used at the Mayo Clinic and
Cleveland Clinic, said Robert B. Walker, M.D., chairman
of Marshall's Department of Family and Community Health.
There will be a lot of advantages
in terms of efficiency, Dr. Walker said. If your family
practice doctor decides you might need a consultation
from a cardiologist or a surgeon, you simply go to an
office nearby in the same facility to get that
consultation. All the facilities of Cabell Huntington
Hospital will be available, too, if they're needed.
We also have all kinds of dedicated
space for modern medical equipment that helps us perform
many types of procedures, Dr. Walker said. That's the way
modern medical care is evolving. We want to continue the
kind of personal relationship with our patients that is
so valuable, yet we want to do that in the most
up-to-date medical environment there is.
The physicians of University Family
Practice treat newborns through adults, as well as offer
prenatal and women's health care. The doctors also have
training in counseling, behavioral sciences, orthopedics
and outpatient and minor surgery.
All our family practice doctors
have had formal training in many medical fields, he said.
Our specialty was formed in the 1960's because something
seemed to be missing. It was difficult for patients to
follow up with two or three different doctors. So now
we're here to offer convenience to patients, prevent
disease and promote health.
To make an appointment with a
physician in Family Practice, simply call the office. The
doctors are ready to offer patients primary health care
on a long-term basis, forming strong physician-patient
relationships.
We're the doctors who specialize in
you, Dr. Walker said.
