Goals
Health Fairs
- Conduct 10 health fairs in Cabell County and 2 heath fairs in rural
counties
(5 3rd grade classes, 5 4th grade classes) - Marshall University Department of Dietetics graduate interns deliver nutrition education and activities at fairs
Intervention Program
- Screen 7- 12 year olds for Body Mass Index (BMI) above 85th percentile October 2007 - December 2008
- 4 physician visits at UP&S Pediatrics over 12 months
- 1 year child's membership to Huntington High Youth/Senior YMC
A - 15% discount to Huntington High Youth/Senior YMCA participants' family members
- Individualized exercise program using innovative Sportwalls and activities from the American Council on Exercise's (ACE)
- Nutrition counseling, grocery store shopping tours, and cooking classes provided by MU Department of Dietetics
- 2 lab draws to assess for diabetes, high cholesterol, and liver disease
Intervention Outcome Goals for Children
- Improved or stabilized BMI
- Improved or stabilized fasting lipid profile, glucose, insulin, and ALT (liver enzyme)
- Improved or stabilized blood pressure
- Improved understanding of physical activity and nutrition guidelines
- Increased amount of weekly physical activity
- Increased frequency of fruit and vegetable intake
- Improved overall dietary behaviors (i.e.: reduced consumption of sweetened beverages and increased consumption of low-fat and fat-free dairy)
- Reduced screen time
