Training New Investigators
It is mandatory beginning in 2003, that new investigators be required to
participate in an orientation program and a continuing education program.
The following 2 steps must be completed. 1. View 3 tapes on Animal Care and
Use and Federal Guidelines. These tapes can be obtained from Dr. Billy Howard
and can be viewed at your leisure. Upon completion of viewing these tapes, a
form must be completed and is kept on file in the Animal Resources.
2. You must complete the Course- Working With the IACUC (Non-VA version) and
Working with Mice in Research Settings or Working with Rats in Research Settings
(whichever is appropriate), and Post-Procedure Care of Mice and Rats in
Research. These courses can be found at the website -
http://www.citiprogram.org/.
Current Investigators
Training is required of all participants in animal research in accordance with
the USDA, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Policy on
Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare,
National Institutes of Health. 9 Code of Federal Regulations states:
"Personnel conducting procedures on the species being maintained or studied will
be appropriately qualified and trained in those procedures." [9CFR, 2.31 (d)
viii].
Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals: "Personnel caring for animals
should be appropriately trained, and the institution should provide for formal
or on-the-job training to facilitate effective implementation of the program and
humane care and use of animals." "Investigators, technical personnel, trainees,
and visiting investigators who perform animal anesthesia, surgery, or other
experimental manipulations must be qualified through training or experience to
accomplish these tasks in a humane and scientifically acceptable manner. PHS
Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals : "Personnel conducting
procedures on the species being maintained or studied will be appropriately
qualified and trained in those procedures."
To meet these needs, the following options are available:
1) Individualized Training - Dr. Billy Howard, is available for
individualized training for personnel working with animals. Dr. Howard is also
available for consultations regarding the use of animals or development of new
procedures involving animals.
2) Web based training - http://www.citiprogram.org/. In order to complete the
training components go to the above website and log on if you have previously
used this site, or register as a new user. You must then affiliate with an
institution (Marshall University) from a dropdown menu then click SUBMIT. The
next step is to select the courses (listed above). Upon completion of the
courses the certificates of completion will be forwarded to the Animal Resource
Facility and be placed in your training file. |
